General Session Keynote: The other side of assessment: Humanizing the Multilingual Learner Experience
In this keynote, we demystify assessment for multilingual learners and their educators by going beyond high-stakes scores to unearth rich and humanizing classroom-level data.  In viewing assessment as a participatory process, we embrace a broader perspective that encompasses the interests, languages, cultures, identities, and experiences of students.  Highlighting the multilingual experience, we discuss principles of effective assessment to support student growth, critical stance, agency, and autonomy.  Moving away from traditional approaches, we present the other side of assessment – one that fosters interaction, dialogue, interdependence, community building, and space for centering multiple voices.

Strengthening the Fabric of Instruction: Interweaving Content and Language
WIDA’s four Big Ideas in the 2020 ELD Standards Framework underlie curriculum, instruction, and assessment for multilingual learners. In this session, we focus on the integration of content and language within a functional approach to language development. Beginning with an authentic classroom scenario, we explore tasks and texts across content areas. Working in small groups, participants identify content and language demands and explore ways to scaffold learning by leveraging multilingual learners’ linguistic and cultural assets while accessing multimodalities. With opportunities for dialog and reflection, participants then debrief their experience using a standards-based checklist to support teaching and learning.

General Session: Ambitious Teaching Centered on Multilingual Learners
At the heart of Ambitious Teaching is the willingness and ability of teachers to engage learners in setting their own learning goals and participating in cognitively challenging learning tasks to inquire, generate ideas in order to make sense and problem solve complicated real-world topics. Ambitious teaching, a sa pedagogical approach advocated for and practiced in various disciplines, had only begun to explore how it can be implemented specifically centering on multilingual learners. While rigorous standards and a cohesive curriculum can be tools to aid in this endeavor, this promising pedagogical approach requires educators serving multilingual learners to make some fundamental mindshifts about teaching and learning and adhere to a set of principles regarding equity-centered teaching for multilingual learners. In this presentation, Iwill discuss the mindshifts required for Ambitious, Equity-centered Teaching for multilingual learners and share examples of how teachers committed to this approach make a difference everyday in their classrooms.
